C4SS Q3 2011 Fundraiser

Dear Supporters of the Center for a Stateless Society,

I’m starting the third quarter 2011 fundraiser early in hopes that it will clear up an apparent database problem with the donation software we use.

Here’s where we’re at…

C4SS staff has been paid for up through half of their February 2011 pay. Here is what our regular monthly expenses for staff pay look like.

Research Associate: Carson — $250 (2 weekly articles + $50, 1/6 of 1 biannual study)
News Analyst: Worden — $100 (1 weekly article)
News Analyst: D’Amato — $300 (3 weekly articles)
Social Media Specialist: Litz — $320 (10 hours/wk / 40 hours/month @ $8/hour)
Media Coordinator: Knapp — $640 (20 hours/wk / 80 hours/month @ $8/hour)

Total: $1610

So, half of February plus all of March through June means we’re seeking 4.5 times $1610 — which means we’re looking to raise $7245 between now and the end of August 2011.

To donate, please click on the “Contribute” button which you’ll find on the fundraising widget you’ll find on every page of our web site.

Nobody else really fills the niche we fill. If you agree that what we do matters, please support our work as best you can.

  1. Well that one didn't go too well. Even the fact that the widget shows 16 donors belies the fact that some of those sixteen were the same people giving more than once and about a quarter of them made up nearly half the total donated.

So where does it go from here? Is it just a bad time for people with lower discretionary spending power? I wondered at the beginning of this one whether it was spread over too long a period, that maybe made people say "oh, I'll do it next month when the pay cheque comes in" and then forgot about it maybe? I know I determined to give some at the beginning and some at the end, so anything I gave would show up as two lumps and not a "steady trickle" of donations right the way through.

I suppose one problem with doing things smaller and more frequently like monthly is the time that takes out of whoever is responsible for setting it up, publicising it and cajoling and reminding people about it three times instead of once a quarter.

I wonder also, perhaps, whether "ChipIn" is somehow more effective than doing it all yourselves through the BV site – maybe it's less hassle just to "click and give" through a system they see more frequently in other places and therefore has some kind of social acceptance that filling in all your details on a private website does not have?

I guess I'm trying to avoid asking the more obvious question – does anyone else actually care enough to show their appreciation through donations? I don't think there's anything else quite like the C4SS output for reflecting what nearly all the time is my own sentiments on issues. I've lost count of the number of times I've primed my fingers to type something for my own blog on a matter of current issue only to find you guys beat me to it by a few days and write more eloquently and persuasively and with a bigger audience.

Oh dear – what's to do – effectively now people haven't been paid anything since March, is that right? I don't know what to say except that you are all heroes and martyrs for keeping it together.
